Raptures In the Grace of your love.

Now growing up I knew a ton of people who were into indie bands and labels of the early to mid and late 90's. They all listened to these shoe gazer bands, to be honest  they were cool sounding if you were loaded.  While I was fighting with people to throw on the Primal Scream Album while some one would be going ape shit about some band they discovered the night before at a show at Emo's in Austin.   I would just go to the safety of my car where I could dominate the tape player and listen to what ever the hell, I wanted too.   Be free of  crappy music.

I would have to say this album sounds really bad. Perhaps they are better live.  Perhaps they are a happy alternative to the bands that rock out hard with the same power chords and boring bass lines we have been hearing since the 70's & 80's.    Perhaps they have had short lived fame since leaving DFA. A label that for the most part did fine with there departure to a major label.
Curious the bands return, despite the labels (DFA) obvious flare for alt-disco, post punk rhythms  and electro .   That has crossed over into many kinds of  dance music djs all over the globe.    Jame's the DFA label owner has his  own band  the LCD Sound System that is a much  much bigger act. If you saw there last  and final concert you know what I am talking about.
I would have to say that this album is a really boring experience. There is a ton of cooler bands though none come to mind while writing this blog. Perhaps when the remixes come around this album will take on a different life until then I would just say this has nothing to with quality. Sounds like a dull "Nuuw Yarkk" band.

So please do your self a favor don't recycle bad music. Just cause some main stream music mag & all the hipster kids are rocking this album . Do your self a favor and listen to any thing else. Do not try to convince your friends that this is by any ways cool, or the new alternative . The fact is this  album is boring and predictable.  Don't waste time on your hard drive.    Best avoided, however might be cool if your depressed and thinking of suicide.

Evil Nine :For Lovers Vol 1 ( Best of 2011)

In 2011 there is no shortage of quality music doing the rounds.   This year has been quite a good year for long players and Evil Nine's "For Lovers Vol. 1" seems to be more than just a collection of singles traditionally speaking.
They have landed a album that will be sitting pretty on play list for years to come.
Evil Nine the group that is well known in Breaks circles has come up aces with one of the best long players of 2011. Every track just bleeds with the current "Future Retro Sound" . A production quality made more hip in 2010 & 2011 by the artist Kink. Tracks filled with tons of energy and flare that get things moving on your dance floor and for party goers alike.
This album contains all playable tracks. This album also contains a unique crossover factor that many dj types look for. Tracks that can be played by crossover genres of djs including the American "Party-Rave" dj types.  This album should be on the top of your list. This will cross over, between house, techno, bass, breaks-beats.  I find this Lp to be the sort of energy filled crossover business that keeps the energy up and the people interested in what your roller coaster dj set. Five Stars buy on site!

Depeche Mode Best of Remixes Part 2 out today officially 6/6/2011

Depeche Mode Best of Remixes Part 2 (81-11)

This is a simple must buy collection split into 3 disk (Cd Version) .  Over a 30 year history in being one of the most successful music acts of all time. Not to mention there place in the hearts of anyone into electronic music , or good music period. One of the few bands that survived the Nu Wave  era of the 80's and the Post Modern MTV & MTV 120 era of the 90's.
This band showed the music business how it was to be done. Release and album, put out multiple singles of the of music with various remixes , non album tracks, and live versions exclusive to a singles . Also dominating the 12"  vinyl dj culture with remixes of there music for different types of dance floors and djs. Then release these on Cds, dont forget the Cd Maxi singles and cassette.  Depeche Mode would also release singles with alternative and live  versions and remixes for fans and collectors in multiple markets. So in brief , you would have a North American Versions, Uk Versions, French Versions (but not in French) and a German import version.    This is often considered the standard practice  in music  industry.  This has also lead to the marathon careers and longevity in the music business and a global fan base. Depeche Mode continues to sell out arenas thirty years onward.

This is a collection of 30 years years.  A 3 Cd Collection with the 3rd disk being  all from 2011 and  exclusive.   This is will not appeal whole heartedly into the core fan base who for what ever reason see D.M. as anything other than a rock band.  That is the appeal of D.M. they transcend genres and continue to be relevant . No other bands have been more influential into progressive and modern music like Depeche Mode's domination of vinyl and dj culture.
This new collection is a must have because no matter how cutting edge you think you are. D.M. are one of the most loved bands in music , not to mention club culture.  Anything in this collection is one sure way to make a horrible night behind the decks forgotten instantly with one of the most beloved bands that has never lost it cutting edge status.

High lights include the Vince Clark Remix ( of Erasure) of "Behind The Wheel" . My favorite remix of D.M. ever is the Bushwacka! Remix of  "Dream On" from 2001.  The "Personal Jesus" Remixes are also included and  are huge at the moment.  Many of the remixes are from the last 10 years from Depeche Mode's  often over looked and under rated last three albums & remixes of some of there best original music transformed for today's modern dance floors.
How ever I would say it is quite a shame that none of the Danny Tenaglia's remixes or at least of his re- mix of "I Feel Love" should have been included. I would have thought his promo only mix of "I feel Love" which still sells for 25$ -50$ on vinyl would  put this collection over the top for collectors and D.M. fans. Danny was one of the most high profile djs in  New York club land  if not the world for the last 20 years, how over the powers that be did not include it into this collection.

So djs if you need some ammo and something new to play out that will catch ears and win hearts and minds this is easily a must have.  Most of the remixes will get you a big thumbs up from anyone and everyone.  This will also give  younger people who feel the need to play electronic music to packed clubs and dance floors some much needed depth and credibility .   All in all this is  fantastic! I would recommend buying this on cd for the simple face that the wave format will sound louder and will just bump harder in  the club than  a middle of the road i-tunes bit  (192 )rates. Regardless  what format your into you will love this.

Robert Babicz "Nektar EP"""

Robert Babicz new release "Nektar Ep." is a must have for any one who wants to make a big splash and still keep it" house" oriented. This release is also on Robert's own Babicz Style Label.  The tittle track Nektar, has one of the most evil killer bass lines in recent years. This buzzing bass line is electro house with out any of the typical boring production glitz.  This track rolls on and on, but is a shear delight to play as it seems to go on forever and and never looses your attention. However I suspect this one will be played for some years to come as its an instant classic for the late night house and techno generation.
Several tracks from this  Ep were  also played  on his stunning Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. I am going to say for the record if you have not heard his Mix, please do so. He's already got my vote for the best mix this year!

"From Manchester to New Castle " is also fully deserving of some air time as well. Its deep Detroit techno classic bass line defines Roberts limitless production quality.
"Vibrating Hearts" is a late night 303 acid squelcher.  Its deep , infectious and building pace is a roller coaster of emotions. Deep into the heart of Robert Babiczs acid  past.   The "Nektar EP" is 4 tracks of solid playable  timeless music that will be getting loads of air time in club land all over the world. When people like Robert Babicz release such timeless music. Its is both inspiration and frustration that your own music will never be as  as perfect as this producers magic touch on electronic music. How ever his long time devotion to music has taken him years to where he is today. I can appreciate his dedication and his perfections. Well done Robert Babicz ,well done indeed!   Check out Roberts Babicz Nektar Ep on youtube!

Tony Lionni " Lost Souls Ep"

If your are an avid house or techno buyer, Tony Lionni is a production mega star. Unless you have been living under a rock Tony Lionni  has been a constant spark of inspirations in his piano laden soulful sounds. I can honestly say Tony has not put a wrong foot forward yet. Every thing this guy puts out is not only amazing, it raises the bar that the average producer hopeful might need a life time to even get close to the quality of  Tony Lionni .
His current release the Lost Souls Ep is stunning in its simple yet effective house groove. Piano's and deep pulsing bass lines that make just playing his music and djing his tracks the highlight of any and every set.
"Positive Vibrations" is my choice pick to play out. How ever you could play any and every track with no regrets.

If your still banging away, with tired electro house or still think Dub step is still in vogue. You are missing out on one of this decades premiere electronic music producer. House music in 2011 has been healthier and more vibrant than ever. House music has made a huge come back in the last few years Tony Lionni  is one reason why.

Dig Deeper Phase One &Two

Danny Howells upstart label in early 2009 reaches a three year bench mark. Obviously not an easy thing to do in this day in age of the madness of endless amounts of labels in digital distribution .  Danny has had  quite a staple of music. I find that 'Dig Deeper'  tracks  are more often some of my favorite tracks to play out over even  newer and even bigger tracks.
Historically this label is the continued progression of where early nineties epic house changed into progressive house that stood side by side with trance once upon a time and for quite a few years. How ever the commercialization of trance only led  so many djs and music fans away from the genre with advent of the Electro House, Fidget and Minimal genres that pushed too many djs  on to playing current variations of questionable electronic music and only alienated people who were passionate about house music . While other sub genres of house have grown in the bleak musical times of electro &minimal.
This label stayed true to there underlying passion that at its core is House Music, and its disco parents in rhythm.
This label started by Danny Howells in 2009 , was done to establish his obvious  high level profile into the world of djs owned & run labels. To have an output for the music and fellow dj-producers that Danny is passionate about .Dig Deeper has been a constant  shining light of modern house for cooler dance floors and djs who stress understated  track quality. It has stayed clear from gimmicks artist and remixes from flavor of the month acts. Dig Deeper has grown a reputation for underground credibility and playability in 2011 and beyond.

This  Compilation split into two parts has some of the most impressive roster of producers, including Danny Howell's himself, Tom Budden, Johannes Heil , Stryke,Surrealism,Nick Warren, and Brendon Moeller.  A line up that continues to show understated quality over commercialism. A label that will continued to get plays from electronic music djs all over the world for quite some time. This label mirrors the quality of a Bedrock Records with out the hype. It stays true to its main focus as an underground house label.
It is refreshing when so many digital labels are going down a road that only the "noob"   generation is following.  This compilation also features Nick Warren, and some of his best solo material"Flowers" .Nick being one half of the infamous "Way Out West" . Also Dave Angel adds on of the best remixes I have heard in some time.
I find the saturation in the digital music world  is slimmed down  a little bit with fantastic labels like "Dig Deeper" and  has enough track variety to stand out among the ocean of electronic music labels and artists.
If you want to stress quality electronic music "Dig Deeper " is a way of life. This label lives up to its name and is a must have for people who know what it means to "build it up"! and play enjoyable music. To make a statement with out having to play the biggest and  most grandstanding music and with out feeling like I need to bang it out harder than every one else to make a statement musically. Dig Deeper should be a staple in your play lists.

My write up in the Dallas Observer & Exclusive Mix Tape!

DC9er Mixtape, Vol. 37: Hulon Pate

Categories: DC9er Mixtape

dc9ermixtape-1.jpg
Hulon Pate has a lot of love for house and techno tunes -- so much, in fact, that he spends most of his time on the look out for the next hot thing to drop at Absinthe Lounge, where he currently has a residency, Deep After Dark.

Pate's has been DJing for nearly 20 years now, and considers himself to be a genuine, unpretentious person -- which is what he claims sets him apart for other DJs in Dallas.

As for what to expect when you go to see him play?

"Deep and sexy vocal house early on," he says, "[It gets] more uplifting and moody as the night goes on. Techno and house music with club classics, and remakes with the focus on playing the newest music possible in the genre I play."

Catch Hulon Pate spinning techno, house and everything in between on Monday March, 21 at Absinthe Lounge, and, in the meantime, make sure to check out his exclusive DC9er mix and Q&A after the jump.

HulonWade.jpg
Hulon Pate
For how long have you been DJing?
I have been DJing since the early '90s, quietly buying records building my music collection.

How did you get your start?
Making mixtapes for friends, playing in gay clubs, playing in back-rooms at rave events, and throwing one-off parties.

What was your first gig like?
People asking for Abba. I was like, "No, but I got some Jeff Mills!"

Who/what are some of your biggest influences musical or otherwise?
Detroit Techno, New Order, Underworld, BBC Radio 1 ,Carl Cox, Ralph Lauren, Mr.C, Mix Mag, Saint Etienne, Waterloo records, Depeche Mode, Front 242, Perfecto Records, Soma Quality Recordings, Moby, Tresor Records and early "Edgeclub."

Which DJs do you follow? Do you have a favorite?
Shur-I-Kan, Pete Heller, Tony Lionni,  Ewan Pearson ,Charlie May, Francois K., D-Unit, Psycatron, Monaque, Radio Slave, Sasha, Agoria ,Jimpster and Laurent Garnier. Dallas locals Brett Johnson & Demarkus Lewis put out amazing records, too.

What's your favorite genre of music, both to play and to listen to?
I love deep-ended techno and house to play out. Other bands I enjoy [are] Depeche Mode, White Lies, Gold Frapp, Bad Lieutenant and Groove Armada. I tend to listen to podcasts of DJs and producers and record labels on the go.

How do you decide what songs you're going to play?
I make playlists to sort through everything that is new, and current favorites -- music I feel that is credible and will get peoples attention or a reaction. If people like something, they let you know.

How much preparation goes into putting a set together?
Being a resident at Absinthe Lounge with my Deep After Dark night, you learn how to play longer sets and can adjust to the many challenges and obstacles in a nightclub setting, and how to program music for longer periods of time. It takes up most of my time.

What are your main objectives when it comes to playing music? (Are you looking to entertain the crowd, educate them, or something different altogether?) I try to play new music first. People have every outlet for every other kind of music out there, streaming music -- FM and satellite radio, and digital distribution 24/7. I want people to dance and have a great night out, and hear something new that will catch their ear and be a memorable experience. Not just playing the same crap you hear everywhere else. That's too easy to do.

What can someone expect when they come to see/hear you play?
I think people can expect one of the best music nights in Dallas.

What kind of equipment do you use?
I use CDJs, Pioneer Mixer, 1200s, and a maxed out HP computer with Traktor Pro.

Requests. Love em or hate em?
I try to make people feel good about themselves when they talk to me about a request. I tell them thanks for coming out, and make them feel like the most important person in the place.
If you could play a gig anywhere, with any other DJ/music act, with whom would you play, and where?
I would love to play Space in Ibiza! I would love to play with Layo & Bushwacka or Andy from Groove Armada.

What sets you apart from other DJs in Dallas/Denton/Fort Worth?
I stick to my strengths. I am just myself and not some pretentious fake person. I am comfortable with the quality of the music I program, and what I have to offer as entertainment.

When/where will you be playing next?
I have an ongoing residency at Absinthe Lounge (Deep After Dark). March 21 is my next date. Add me on Facebook for more info.

What can Dallas expect to see from you in 2011?
You can catch me once a month at Absinthe lounge. I also recently started a blog for electronic music I find interesting. You can also subscribe to my Grind2Shine podcast on iTunes. Hopefully, I'll have some dates to add over the summer. We are currently looking to host our sound system at various venues. I will release some new music this year under my lonestardjz guise.
